Morality is not the order of the day at the court of the Duke of Mantua, where the regent drags one beauty after the other into his bed. Even his court jester Rigoletto has only biting mockery for the fate of the dishonored; and the curse hurled at him by a desperate father only seems to frighten him for a moment. In doing so, he hits him to the core - because the fool himself is hiding his daughter Gilda from the cynical gang of courtiers. Rigoletto has no idea that his extreme caution is what makes the tragedy possible in the first place: Gilda, who wants to escape her golden cage at the first opportunity, falls head over heels in love with a young student, and he is none other than the Duke incognito. But what Gilda thinks is great love is just an adventure for the unbridled heartbreaker.

 Verdi's »Rigoletto«, whose libretto is based on Victor Hugo's scandalous piece »Le roi s'amuse«, which was critical of power, has been one of the most successful works in the operatic repertoire since its premiere in Venice in 1851.
