"The Marriage of Figaro or The Great Day" - As the full title of Mozart and Da Ponte's masterpiece reveals, the plot unfolds in just 24 extremely turbulent hours: the shrewd barber Figaro and his Susanna want to get married. Both are subordinates of Count Almaviva, whose thirst for love affairs has become legendary. While the latter hopes to be able to satisfy his lust for Susanna, the latter, together with the humiliated countess, sets up an intrigue in order to expose the man. However, the two women did not expect the charmingly clumsy advances of the pubescent Cherubino and the jealousy of both the count and the unsuspecting Figaro. When the housekeeper Marcellina and the seedy Doctor Bartolo insist
Mozart's musical comedy "Le nozze di Figaro" closely follows its text, Beaumarchais' rapid social satire. With a masterly musical and dramatic instinct, Mozart finds the right tones for the comical and erotic entanglements, but also for the melancholy and injuries that result in the characters.
"Le nozze di Figaro" is the first of the three Da Ponte operas which, despite the fast-paced, comedy-like plot, already reveals the rebellious thoughts of the French Revolution.
